New Release - Steel Town by John P. Matsis

Steel Town, a city of proud immigrant men and women awakens to the call of a distant war. Bessemer converters, open hearths, and steel workers gear for the machinery of a war they don’t understand. Night is no longer dark as the horizon glows from the nonstop flow of molten steel; the evenings no longer tranquil as eighteen-wheelers roar, fully loaded with steel to make tanks that spit fire and for destroyers that patrol the Sea of Saigon.

In a place as alien as a far off planet, two boys, the best of friends, come to age and find themselves catapulted into the horror of war—where the enemy, like moles, tunnel beneath the damp earth and into the hillsides, where booby trapped bombs and punjii stakes await the unwary American soldiers as they step through tall grasses and beneath the canopy of dense vegetation in search of the enemy. It is a place where a cunning and determined enemy calls home, a jungle arena where boyhood dreams and bonds of friendship are tested. The motto, “till death do us part,” becomes a sudden reality when a enemy grenade explodes, and the once “pretty boy” must come to grip with a terrible reality—he has only half a face. He is no longer the boy with a face that girls die for, no longer the vision of a Greek god born of proud immigrant parents.

As the war escalates, Steel Town, Gary, Indiana, must come to grip with the changing times. The old ways are strained, tradition no longer to be taken for granted—the war has changed everything. Like the war afar, lives totter and bend in the gust of controversy. A Greek coffeehouse keeper, an ex-middleweight champion of the world, and a young girl face difficult decisions. A priest struggles with his own demons. Parents look at each with apprehension, uncertain of the future of their sons. Two soldiers, their lives forever changed, struggle in a chess match of life and death. Even the enemy must face the inevitable…that life is indeed fragile

RATING: 3 1/2 Stars

Review by ErinSchmidt @ Rainbow Reviews

BOOK BLURB:Return to the world of Altiva. In this self contained sequel to the novel Death at Dragonthroat, Ku'zn a Warrior of the Z'n goes on a journey to save her brother from the clutches of a Warp Wizard, and along the way fights assassins, monsters, sorcerers and her own loneliness to discover what the true meaning of family is.

BOOK REVIEW:I must admit, I had my doubts about Sister Warrior when I first agreed to review it. I feared it might be just another volume of high fantasy, sword-and-sorcery cliches. I was pleasantly surprised by the originality of Teel James Glenn's Altivan world. It doesn't hurt that Ku'zn, the novel's heroi ne, is fierce and fascinating. A tall, muscular female with fuzzy blue skin and green pupils, she spends the first quarter of the novel searching for, and finding, her brother. Sister and brother were sold into prostitution ~ willingly, because it was advantageous to their village ~ as young adults and separated. But the price she must pay to be reunited with him is more than Ku'zn can bear. Fortunately, she has a small band of warrior allies, including a teenage girl who also worked at her brother's brothel, and an Earth-born Vietnam veteran who landed in Altiva through magical intervention, to support her through her action-packed adventures. Later sections of the novel lack the emotional intensity of the scenes between Ku'zn and her brother, but continue to keep the reader engaged.

Sex is non-existent in some fantasy worlds. In the world of Altiva, women and men alike are refreshingly comfortable with their sexuality. Ku'zn's Z'n warrior upbringing doesn't allow for any shame to her relationships with both men and women. Love takes many forms, and Ku'zn can even turn her sexuality into a weapon to wield against enemies.

Fantasy fiction fans will enjoy this hearty tale of love, courage, and honor

Four Star review for Beyond the Fifth Gate

When Elita was twelve, she and other local children were ripped away from their families by an invading insectoid race known as the mantids. Twelve years later, she works as a slave for her captors, along with thousands of fellow human beings, in a hive where men are separated from women and humans are neither allowed to speak nor write.

As the daughter of a prophet, Elita has kept her father’s teachings alive, and her believers hold out hope that the Chosen One will one day be called to the gates by Kamali, so that he or she may travel through five different worlds to gather the items needed to destroy their enslavers.

Their group, The Retribution Squad, has chosen Elita to be the one to make the journey when Kamali’s light appears. Elita’s beloved, Koen, risks his life to provide her with a weapon just in time, and then, Elita spots a brilliant light flashing from a nearby hillside.

Elita’s journey through the five gates puts her faith, memories, and prejudices to the test. Through new allies, new knowledge, and a new understanding of their enemies, Elita gains hope for her quest. However, the alignment of the planets is almost over, signaling the impending close of the gates, and she must race against the clock to gather the crucial items she will need to save humanity.

An interesting take on humans versus aliens, I appreciated how the author gave us an entirely three dimensional “chosen one” who does not immediately have all the skills that she needs. This gives the reader a chance to learn and grow with the heroine as she advances on her journey.

New five star customer review at Amazon

"Donna Sundblad's, Windwalker, is a journey abundant with fantasy, compassion, promise, romance, and fright.

Windwalker is set along volatile seashores, under the dreamy skis of the mystical world of Ranaan. A world engaged by intense protagonists who struggle against despair with courage, while others swell with hatred and intolerance.

Unerringly, as ancient prophecies warned, a fair-skinned native tribe, the Jonnick, arrive on the shores of Ranaan, plagued by sickness, beset with a curse, seeking refuge.

The righteous Stygian welcome the tribe, unaware that the foreseen disease that the foreigners bring is the least of their worries.

Five hundred years later, the births of the Arich born on a moonless night and the Augar born with a bumble foot, mark the onset of prophecy fulfilment, and the time of joining.

A few years later, with their world on the verge of destruction, the most improbable couple, a crippled Jonnick girl with a hidden Stygian bloodline (Jalil), and a lonely Stygian boy, raised as a Jonnick, (Manelin) unite, and find themselves thrust into challenges beyond their wildest fears, as they set out on a quest to unravel the true meaning of the prophecies, while a wicked queen does everything in her power to thwart the fulfillment.

Author Donna Sundblad, does an amazing job of pulling you into her fantasy world. She awakens the senses and stimulates curiosity. You feel, the cool mist spray your skin, as you see and hear the waves crash at the mountain base, the breeze through your hair. Salt from the sea tantalises your taste buds and fear rips at your intellect.

Donna convinces the readers of many convoluted effects, one being the ability of Windwalker characters to transform and travel with the wind from the past, present and into the future.

The Stygian prophecies may or may not be fulfilled, but there is promise that the reader will be. This is a journey you don't want to miss. It will leave you yearning for the sequel and fantasizing about walking on the wind.

Second Time Around receives four star review from Carl Brookins

Fun and Murder in Montana

Timothea Campbell (Timmi to her friends) has a perfectly nice life in a small town not far from Missoula, Montana. She owns and runs Campbell Business services in the town of Jocko. Her comfortable house on twenty wooded acres is populated with dogs cats and assorted wildlife.

While walking her pets one morning, a dead man rolls down the hill and practically lands at her feet. She doesn't recognize the corpse, even though the stiff turns out to be her father. Thus begins a wild and complicated tale of revenge, years of lies, romance, and, of course murder. More than one. This suspenseful mystery also contains a well-thought-out romantic entanglement between two feisty independent characters in a novel filled with engaging characters.

Timmi herself, a transplant from the East Coast, has adapted to rural ways quite well, even up to packing heat upon occasion. For someone with her kind of mercurial temperament, I might want her to wear a temperature gauge at times. While the story does not have a high level of forward drive, the author's sense of place, her characters, and the complications of a former lover (Deputy Jack Kendall) becoming the principal investigator in the case as the bodies pile up, all adds to reader interest. A fun, well written, story about a couple of people you'll want to meet again.
